Print Concepts FREEBIE!

Some years you get students who have great understanding of print concepts.  You can tell they have been read to a lot, they understand which way words go across a page and they understand the difference between letters, words and sentences.  But there are those years where your students really need some extra help with print concepts.  I've created this easy to use pocket chart activity that I am hoping will help my kinders that struggle with tracking from left to right.  It's designed for a pocket chart.  Check out the pictures below.

An ABC song {FREEBIE}

I've been using this alphabet song for a very long time.  I use it as part of my morning routine/ carpet time.  It loosely goes to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star".  At the beginning of the year, I do it more as a chant because I want them to get the correct pronunciation of the sounds.  The only problem with this song is that when kids sing it, they tend to add the "uhh" to the end of the sound- which is why we start it as a chant instead of the tune.   Last year, I also began using Jack Hartman's Workout to the Letter Sounds (the open version so we could use our words) some days just to give us a different way to do it.  Anyway, my old copy of the song that I had for my calendar area didn't have very cute graphics.  With all the amazing artists on TpT, I was able to find almost all of the words I needed (even ox which was always hard to find).  Click on the link to get your copy ABC song.

The Busy Beach FREEBIE

We are in the middle of an ocean unit.  I found this book in our Common Core Unit Book Tubs. It is a great book to connect to math.  It goes through different animals on the beach and how many legs they have all together. Position Words FREEBIE!

One of our first math standards we are teaching is Common Score Standard Geometry 1: Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes and describe the relative position of these objects uding terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind and next to.  So I made this activity to practice that standard.  I am picturing it in a small math group with the teacher reading the directions and the students placing objects in the correct locations on the board.  Hope it might be something you could use to practice that standard.  Position Word FREEBIE!

I decided to offer another FREEBIE on TpT and TN- it's a "Read It, Trace It, Put the Sentence Together" packet with 15 different sentences all about colors.  Here are a couple of pictures and the link to TpT.  These put together sentences were a permanent feature last year at my Working With Words/Sentences station during our literacy block.  I started off with the version where the students trace the sentence and as the year went by we transitioned to the version where they write the sentence.  I also used these sentences occasionally as morning work.  Believe or not, they never tired of the activity.  And I created sets of them for practically every unit/theme we had last year.  I have lots of them in my TpT store, so if they look good to you, check them out.  Enjoy the freebie and I would love to hear what you think of them!  And, if you have any suggestions of other themes I could make these packets for, I'd love to hear that as well.  Some that are in the works are- back to school, silly rhyming sentences (to go with the Common Core Unit 1), school helpers/community helpers, and five senses just to name a few.
